If you have ever allowed your users to omit records from a portal you've probably implemented the Copy All Records function. That script requires a separate layout with just the field you are filtering for your portal with and a lengthy script that switches between layouts without your user knowing how you pulled off the trick. Although the old technique certainly works well, it requires too much overhead in comparison to a custom function. A custom function can also be used to create a calculation that requires absolutely no scripting to update the portal if you don't store the calculation results. To bridge the gap between the old technique and the new custom function this article will still use a script so you see how it can be implemented in your own solution.
