Although FileMaker has a built in feature in the Manage>Database field validation to require that a field not be left empty, sometimes using this feature is more cumbersome and problematic for users. I usually try to avoid enabling this feature because more often than not the field is really only occasionally required. Then, when someone makes a mistake and needs to delete the record and is stopped by the FileMaker error dialog box they tend to force-quit the database, which can cause them to lose data. The new conditional formatting feature in FileMaker 9 allows you to strike a balance between forced data entry and good user interface. This sample file will show you how to implement this technique.
