The phone filter example has been around for a long time. The last time it was really updated was when FileMaker implemented the auto enter calculated value/replace function. The problem with this technique is that it didn't actually filter the contents until after the user exited the field. That meant that it miss-trained your users into a false sense of entering the data correctly because they could type anything they wanted and it would show up in the field until the field formatting and/or validation was triggered. New to FileMaker Pro 10 is the onObjectKeystroke trigger. This new trigger can be used to create a new standard of data entry formatting that is triggered while the user types so they get instant feedback and correct formatting with a minimum amount of data entry.
