Support of Let’s Encrypt Open Source SSL Certificates.
I just learned of Let's Encrypt https://letsencrypt.org/ and came here to suggest FM support for this. Luckily I searched first. You have my vote!
I think this would be great; however there are probably some obstacles to making this happen.
I also think its a good idea. I think limiting who can issue certificates is just wrong. Prior to Lets Encrypt, I used MacOS Server as a CA to issue certificates, yes its a pain, less since profile manager came about.
Back to the issue, I think if a person decides to use Lets Encrypt, they should be able to.
FMI just needs to use the OS certificate store instead of their own.
it is already possible to use the Lets-encrypt certificates, but one has to import them every three months or write a script that replaces them automatically ..... however any of those methods would not be a secure way of handling things because it involves copying and pasting the private key over the network etc.
Yes, I know you can use them, I guess I assumed the original poster meant what I would like to see, the ability to do it from the web interface for server.
I've written a guide with a video and a PowerShell script for automating getting Let's Encrypt SSL certificates for FileMaker Server. Check it out here!
How to Use Let’s Encrypt SSL Certificates with FileMaker Server | Blue Feather - FileMaker Developer, Android, Web
That script was super-helpful, thank you for sharing it!
CPanel and just about every major webhost is enabling automattic generation and renewal of LetsEncrypt certificates.
Would be great easy to see FileMaker offer this instead of forcing the use of expensive GoDaddy (or others) certificates that are technically identical.
Domain validation is done by a robot at these certificate issuers, bundling CertBot with FM Server should be a no brainer.
If not in FM Server, at least include it in FmCloud where SSL is (understandably) required.
I would like to see it in both FMServer and FMCloud, but at least in FMServer we can rig up our own solutions if needed (as Smef posted in https://community.filemaker.com/ideas/1367#comment-19264 ).
But you're right, that bundling Let's Encrypt certbot in FmCloud in particular should be a no-brainer. It would tremendously simplify deployment, as well, because the server would be capable of getting its own renewable cert instead of needing an admin to buy one separately and upload it every [x] years.
I stopped by to check out your guide and video. Excellent work David. Thanks for taking the time to make it easier for everyone. I haven't had a chance to check out the script yet but I am sure just having the extra 'outlook' will help many others who are dealing with this. Kudos!!
There is also a nice guide for MAC Servers:Let’s Encrypt SSL Certificates for FileMaker Server for Mac | Blue Feather - FileMaker Developer, Android, Web
I believe it is a first priority for Filamaker
