How about adding one extra text formatting option and being able to define hypertext links in text fields?
such that a hyperlink has:

Essentially we want to embed FileMaker buttons in text fields. Tooltips too.
As an example for FMI product managers who might consider such a feature... There's a certain database that FMI distributes to FBA members each month, that includes "home page" text that includes what is supposed to be clickable links. A workaround trick was used, where invisible buttons were placed under the text. I'm sure it works fine on Mac, and so who cares about Windows?! But for those of us on Windows, this workaround trick doesn't work, as the clickable area tends to be a few lines ABOVE the text that is highlighted in blue as an indication of it's clickability. Throw in the occasional need for changing the text, resizing the text block, using anchors to adjust the window size, etc, and this all becomes a big mess on both platforms.
Oh, I forgot to mention, that ideally, rendering speed should not go down with this feature added ;-)
"rendering speed should not go down with this feature added"
This should be set ahead of e-v-e-r-y Feature Request at all
I don't think our feature requests would be considered reasonable if we expected that in all cases.
But the rendering engine itself at this moment IMHO has a lot of space for performance optimization...
I think currently FMP renders all text itself without OS help.
Maybe in a future version FMP could use OS controls. Because those OS based text labels and edit fields may support hyperlinks.
Great suggestion! Yes, I've found that the urls need to be fully qualified most of the time for this to work:
here.com (not valid enough to know this is a link)
http://here.com (the protocol supplied)
Now if there were a good method to help users know they need to do this...
It might be to bold to ask for, but, perhaps this could be solved by adding a new kind of field type "editable html"? Sort of a mix between a text field and a web viewer...
I have no idea if there's a "simple" way of simply adding URL capability to current text fields, but guessing that it isn't, maybe we should aim for the stars?
I have by the way used script triggers/on-timer scripts to simulate hyperlinks in text fields - not exactly elegant, but it works and is probably better than overlaying button objects.
If we had a RichText editor like we have for this forum's questions/replies, then we would have the HTML background without actually having to enter HTML! Hyperlinks are a huge part of RichText.
That would certainly be a great solution! I would still prefer to have a "edit source"-option available for advanced users/programmatically setting the contents.
Oh yes! The good rich text editors DO have a "raw HTML" option (toggle).

I think that the implementation needs to be in line with how it works elsewhere.
That's what average users expect and anything else would be a non-FileMaker way.
Not sure about Windows but on a Mac users will expect:
For producing text with link in calculation, I would expect a new function TextLink ( text ; url ) or something like that.
And of course the links would show up as part of GetAsCSS() results.
GetAsCSS() is for styles. How would these be available as a style?

I guess you are technically correct, Bev. The only time I ever use GetAsCss is when I need to generate web pages from a text field. I think of the function's results as an overall html representation of the text, and that's where I thought the html links should be a part of it.
