There are many reason and use-case where just having the in-app update mechanism is inappropriate
Simply keep the standalone updaters too to allow individuals to have control of all aspects of install and update.
This is a very important one! In not-so-small companies, end users can't update by themselfes, it is a job for the IT
In my environment, the IT doesn't have information like the original download links - they go to the web page of the software company (here filemaker.com). It is really uncommon, that updaters can't be downloaded as a separte installer
Further on, we have had an ISO certification with a customer this month. The auditor said v e r y clear, that they would not certificate when updating is done / can be done without checking all necessary processes before. Means: users are not allowed to do an update by themselfes
Example? One employe of a customer of ours was able to update 14.0x to 14.06 on his MacBook. Pdf creation failed afterwards. For this company, pdf's are essential... (this happened even before the 'inline updater')
I wonder whether FileMaker would be okay with users sharing the download URLs to get the installer/updaters?
Or the files FMP downloads when it find an update?
You should vote for it yourself jrenfrew
… and maybe send a Feature Request for Jive "Vote Up" to be set automatically for Author!
… or is there anybody who wishes to create a 'Product Idea' to vote down?!
Indeed I should... !
Users in organizations where their computers are managed by an IT department most likely don't have administrative rights on their computer and therefore will not be able to use the Check for Updates feature.
At my organization we push out FileMaker Pro updates to licensed users.
For public companies that are subject to Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 requirements auditors *may* balk at automatic updates if the Filemaker solution is within scope. I would suggest there should be some way for IT departments to manage updates for systems under their domain.
This is ridiculous that they don't offer the standalone installer. We do not allow our users admin rights on the machines and now we can't push out the update through Munki like we used to. Thanks for making end-user management more difficult, FileMaker. Please bring back the standalone installers.
