As in many graphics applications a Paste in Place feature in Layout Mode would be useful. Paste in Place should paste copied objects onto the layout with the same coordinates as when they were copied.
Long, long, long past due
You can get close with this technique.
Before pasting click on the location where you want the paste to occur. FMP will set that as the starting coordinate for the paste. The center of the object on the clipboard appears to be the anchor point for the paste.
You can also copy your object in layout mode, go into browse mode, and then back into layout mode and, without touching the layout, hit paste and it will paste in place.
Awesome, that's a fantastic new (to me) technique.
Thanks for sharing it.
an extra manual step, but worth not having to fight where it lands! thank you.
Thanks ch0c0halic, I do know this one but it is not ideal!
thanks David. This seems to be the best work around, but still a workaround.
if you write the steps down:
cmd/ctrl+C then, cmd/ctrl+B then, cmd/ctrl+L then, cmd/ctrl+V
cmd/ctrl+C, then shift+cmd/ctrl+V
which looks better? ;-)
It seems many of us didn't know about this workaround, David, so thank you for posting it! It is still not as good as the real thing, so I still support this request, but it is a good tip!
Just to be clear, I upvoted this, because yes, my tip is still just a workaround.
and just be clear too: I really meant it when I said Thanks! This is a very helpful tip. My comments were directed at - hopefully - those FileMaker Inc folks who might read this post, not at you! All the best.

My thoughts are that it is relative to the layout, and if the layout isn't tall enough than it can paste as randomly as it does now. But if it CAN paste into the same spot, then it should.
I would prefer, that if I'm on layout 1 and copy, that it paste into layout 2 in the SAME location and extend where needed). A new layout is not going to have the same dimensions as one you a adjusted so carefully.
Then again, sometimes I just need to duplicate a layout to get the dimensions right and bring over what I would have copy/pasted. But that is not always reality, as a copy/paste may be a button bar, for example, which needs to be on every layout. The rest of the layout is not the same. I'd still prefer the extension to occur with paste. (Extension by layout part?)
But I've just learned to make sure the parts are the same height/width before pasting.
But "in place"? Absolutely, essential. Barring that, group what is to be copied. Note top & left Position in Inspector. Paste. Amend top & left if needed. <sigh>
