There is a world outside from FileMaker... therefore also container data which is maintained outside from FileMaker, but the FileMaker users need to use this data.

Agreed. In the past I've found had clients request to be able to store references to a hierarchy of files on a NAS volume, but still keep the files themselves on the volume so they could be edited by other apps. Making it mandatory that FileMaker itself be the central repository for any documents that a user might want to reference from within a FileMaker record seems to me to be a needless reduction in functionality with no clear user benefit.
