Need programmatic way to detect if a table is ESS

I want to automate the process of importing data from a production database into an empty clone, but I need to skip ESS tables (since that data is stored externally). There does not appear to be any way of programmatically differentiating between a locally stored table and an ESS table, therefore, I can't tell which tables to skip.

It would be very helpful when querying the FileMaker_Fields system table if either 1) the 'BaseFileName' column were modified to somehow indicate that the ESS table does not live in the FileMaker database, or 2) a separate column were added with some code to indicate that a file is stored in the FileMaker database, vs. externally referenced as an ESS table (or external table occurrence, for that matter).
