Please create a version for FileMaker Server which can run without Java.
Oracle is changing their support policies and we'd like to avoid coming into a situation where we need a contract for Java with Oracle.
Here is a longer article in German explaining the changes:

Can we have some insights from FMI?
AFAIK, the FMPA AND FMS Installer is built on "install4J" which requires Java.

TSGal, RickKalman, anybody?
Thank you, Christian! This is an important issue.
I agree it would be helpful to hear from FileMaker what we will need to expect to pay Oracle starting in January. This seems like a potentially large expense if we have to pay the $25/processor/month charge that is mentioned in the Oracle website. Hopefully, I'm misunderstanding the new Oracle pricing because that expense would require us to increase our pricing.
We are currently reviewing this and examining all available options. We will communicate back to 1) the FileMaker Community, 2) within our knowledge base, 3) and share a longer term roadmap as it pertains to our use of Java within the FileMaker platform. Please stay tuned.

As far as I understood Java 9 and Java 10 JRE will stay free though have limited free support/security patches. Java 11 will need a license.
So FileMaker has about 1 year to resolve this - we basically need a solution without Java (be it completely without - hopefully - or using OpenJDK) for FM 19
Oracle recently announced the end of public updates for Java SE 8 for commercial users. Public updates for Oracle Java SE 8 released after January 2019 will not be available for business, commercial or production use without a commercial license.
Below is the screenshot you will receive when attempting to update Java:
Even though FileMaker Server leverages Java SE 8 for web technologies such as FileMaker WebDirect and Custom Web Publishing (CWP), these web technologies will continue to work after January 1, 2019. And no additional action is required for FileMaker Server users or administrators at this time. FileMaker will be providing additional information regarding its future plans for Java usage with the FileMaker platform, so please check back here for more update.

RickKalman is there any update on future plans for Java usage by FileMaker?
We are getting ready to install FMS17 on a new server and this was brought to my attention by our server admin. Due to being on a college campus and having regularly scheduled security scans (Qualys), once we can no longer update Java past version 191 and a security flaw is found in v191, we will be flagged as a security risk. This would put us at the risk of having to decommission our server within 90 days. I understand that FMS17 is tested to work with v161 and v171 but I would still need to have the latest Java update installed to not be a security risk.
Open Java was brought up as a possibility but I don't believe that is a viable option (at the moment?).
Anyone else in a similar situation? I haven't seen an update to this thread so I'll be checking back.
