If you are running FM17 Server on a Windows Server and the Admin Console runs fine and FileMaker Server runs fine - trying to run /fmi/webd generates error.
If you see this - ENABLE FileMaker WebDirect from the connectors tab - you will get success!
For any thing involving Web towards FMS you should restart your machine after enabling/disabling anything
to be clear i tried restarting
and reinstalling
but unless webdirect is enable you will get 502 errors

Have tried restarting fmswebd, IIS, re-installed Java (version 8 update 161), delete some backups, etc. with no luck so far.
Any suggestions where to look further before doing full re-install of FMS17?

Is 2nd red-outlined toggle control in attached screenshot (WPE, Master Machine) disabled, and won't stay enabled after clicking it? If so, you might try manually updating Java to 8u171. And if that doesn't help, then IIS site steps that OP in above thread tried.

UPDATE:
Upgrading to Java 8u171 did not helped and ISS WebSocketProtocol was running.
Finally found time to do full re-install as per recommendations in one of the threads:
- stopped FMS 17
- uninstalled IIS
- uninstalled FMS 17
- renamed /Program Files/Filemaker Server (had to stop FMS service as uninstall did not do that)
- renamed /Program Files/ISS
- renamed C:/inetpub (had to restart server to be able to do that)
- installed ISS
- installed FMS17, loaded schedules, SSL, started webd and wps
Now up and running with webdirect working! :-) Will see if it keeps that way.

Just a note that, while experiencing a similar issue on a MacOS FMS 17 install, I did find a solution by manually rolling back the installed version of Java to 8u171. Thank you LisaRose for this suggestion.

Haha. I just did it. I thought WebD is enabled by default seeing the screen (it says disabled clearly)... Maybe I'm not experienced the IOS like UI, then got blue dot in slide switch as ON.
