Being able to see the file via the network actually has
nothingvery little to do with being able to host the database over your network. You do not directly to the database file to open it. Instead, you open the file on the host computer with FIleMaker Pro or FileMaker Server, then client machines launch FileMaker Pro and use Open Remote to find and open the file.
Do you have FileMaker Pro or Server installed on the host computer?
Is the file open?
If hosting with FileMaker Pro, is sharing enabled in the FIleMaker Pro application on that computer?
Has the file been configured for sharing?
We are using Filemaker Pro to host.
The file is set for sharing.
The file is open.
The other machines are using Filemaker / Open Remote.
In that case, what exact steps are you taking where you get that message that: "The host is not available or the file is not on that host."?
Are you launching FileMaker and using open remote to select the server, then the file to be opened?
Sounds like you may be going directly to that file via a shared directory and opening it that way instead of via Open Remote.
If so, PLEASE STOP ATTEMPTING THAT IMMEDIATELY!. That can seriously corrupt your file under certain circumstances. Always, always, always connect to a hosted file by selecting Open Remote to find and open the file.
With Filemaker Pro open on one of the quest machines, go to open remote under File. You can see the fmnet address on the left, however no files show in the right window.
We have been entering the file name to the address string in the Network File Path window.
I know that you said that you have made these settings already, but it sounds like either: a) Sharing is not turned on for FileMaker Pro on the host machine. b) The file has not been opened on the host machine (both assume that FileMaker Pro instead of FileMaker Server is being used to host the database) or c) The file itself has not been properly configured for sharing.
Another option to investigate is:
This is one of many acknowledged bugs that can be found in the Known Bug List thread here in the Report an Issue section of the forum.
