    FileMaker 8.5 and MAC 10.6.2

      FileMaker 8.5 and MAC 10.6.2

      Post

I just bought a new computer, an IMac 10.6.2 with Snow Leopard. I migrated all my files and programs from my previous computer, an IBook G4, and now I can't open my Filemaker Pro 8.5 program. Help!

It's the education edition of the software, if that makes any difference.

          Thank you for your post.

First, the Education edition is the same as the retail version, so that is not the problem.

What occurs when you try to launch FileMaker Pro 8.5?  Do you get an error message?  Does it freeze?  Does the opening screen display?  If so, the screen should display what actions it is taking to prepare FileMaker Pro.  Does it stop at any step?

If FileMaker Pro does open, is it just the one database file that won't open?  Or, are you able to create a new database file?

Any additional information would be helpful.

If you used the Migration Assistant for the move, some applications do not transfer accurately and need to be reinstalled.

A reinstall will not normally replace the preferences files that may be damaged, so delete those manually before reinstalling.

              Hi TSGal, thanks for responding.

When I try to launch the program I get a brief image of the FileMaker logo and then an immediate error message "FileMaker Pro quit unexpectedly." Then in the comments section of the error message it has the following information:

                Hi

If this hasn't been resolved (excuse me, I'm new to the forums and am seeking an answer to another issue) but as a Mac user who's recently moved to SNow Leopard, I would suggest that possibly Rosetta hasn't been installed with the operating system -- which is required to run older software.

Find your system DVD, boot up from the disk, and do a custom install to install Rosetta.

                I hope this helps...

Thanks for the help. I manually deleted the preferences file and re-installed the program. The program now opens, however the program quits when I try to open any of my files.

                  Any thoughts?

Open Filemaker, make a new database, save to the internal hard drive and try to open.

Your old databases are on the Hard Drive? Another external drive?

If on an external, run Repair Disk in the Disk Utility in the Utility folder in the Applictions folder.

I tried creating a new database and it still quits. As soon as I click on the "create a new database" button the program quits. It quits regardless of whether I try to do a new file or a template.

Filemaker supports ver10 on OSX 10.6 and none earlier.

I am sure there were reasons for this decision.

Apple is preparing OSX ver 10.6.3 for a release soon. Like all pointpoint updates, it addresses bugs not features.

Fonts can cause problems with older programs, the documentation for diagnosing and fixing potential font conflicts is not very precise.

Do you have added fonts? Do you have OLD fonts. When you open FMP and look at fonts available - ignore that, it quits whenever you try to create a database...

Make a new user in the System Preferences, in the Apple Menu.

Log out and sign in as the new user and test FMP.

First, I see you are using FileMaker Pro 8.5v1.  FileMaker Pro 8.5v2 was certified to run under Leopard operating system, and I am able to install and use it on Snow Leopard (10.6.2).  Just to be sure, I created some database files and was able to add records without incident.

The updater can be found in Knowledge Base Article #6861:

After installation, see if you are able to add records.

I believe that I'm having exactly the same problems (I've just installed OS10.6.2) but mine start with trying to install 8.5v1 from my CDs. There I get the crash report (edited for length):

                              Translated Code Information:

                              Rosetta Version:  22.23

                              Args:              /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Support/LaunchCFMApp /Volumes/FileMaker Pro 8.5/FileMaker Pro 8.5/Contents/MacOS/FileMaker Pro 8.5

                              Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)

                              ...

Therefore I need to install 8.5v2 but I cannot do that until I have v1 installed which I seemingly cannot do.  This seems to be a Catch 22.

                              Do you have any suggestions?
