It is always possible to update an operating system past compatiblity with an older application.
Some of the common OSX new version problem troubleshooting tips are
Download the Combo OSX upgrade from Apple
Do your monthly maintenance (I prefer Applejack)
Reboot in Safe Mode (shift key down)
Apply the Combo Update.
Reboot and test.
If no joy, create a New User called whatever (Test?) with admin rights.
Logout and login as New User and test.
(this diagnoses a system problem as compared to a user problem)
