You would need to install your own FileMaker Server installation on a virtual machine with Amazon to be able to do such. They do not offer shared hosting of FileMaker databases on their servers.
My company has been providing both shared and dedicated hosting of FileMaker databases for over 12 years. Contact me privately if you want more information.
I just installed FMS on an instance and it works fine.
You would have to know a bit about Instances and go through an install of filemaker server and buy your own copy.
If you run older versions of FM it can be shared with Instant Web Publishing, or accessed by FM Clients or whatever technology you prefer.
If you go with John May he does it all for you. (But it seems that FMS15 and above does not allow costarring of servers anymore.. ).
So.. for people who do not want to maintain a server machine the AWS is a good option.
And with AWS you do not have to pay upfront for the software and hardware.
We are in the process of moving our systems to AWS with include FMS and RDP for clients. MS exchange will be moved to MS.
Does anyone know of a detailed spec on how to set up a FMserver on AWS that I could hand my IT guys?
The Instance you set up will be a Microsoft Server 2012 and will behave as such. Therefore your IT guys can access it with any remote access tooland install any compatible software ( for example your copy of fms15) on it. To have a fixed IP (to access myfmserver.mydomain.com) follow the instructions in "elastic IP" in AWS.
How to connect your Active Directory to the Instance's I have not yet figured out but would like to know if someone has.

I wrote a guide recently that should help you get started on this.
It is possible to set this up in their free tier to test, if you have a new AWS account, and you can scale up from there to meet your needs. Hope this helps.
Excellent guide, by the way, and thank you. I'm testing out an AWS server based on the info you supplied.
