You can't do this from drop box as with drop box you are simply copying a file back and forth from the users' computers. If Users A and B download copie and make changes, then upload their copies back to drop box, only the changes made by the last user to upload bax to drop box will appear in the file as their file overwrote/replaced the copy uploaded by the other.
You need to host the file from a server and connect to it as clients. This can be done in several different ways depending on whether you choose to use FileMaker Pro on each user's machine or publish the database to the web so that users can use web browsers to access and modify data on the hosted database. Either way, the file stays in one place and all users modify the same copy of the file on the host computer so that all changes made by all users will persist.
thanks!! that was fast! is there a straightforward way to publish database to the web? we do not have a server.
It's not truly straight forward. You can hire the services of a hosting company that is equipped to use FileMaker Server advanced to host your database. Then you can publish to the web or use filemaker clients to connect to the hosted file.
For starters, you'll want to pull down the help file and select "Instant web publishing guide" from the Product Documentation sub menu to open a PDF file on how to publish a FileMaker database to the web...
publishing to the web is only for viewing not for editing?
also, we seemed to have problem even not with simultaneous access to the same file, but just from the second computer.
Thanks a lot! we will download to edit as you suggested in the first post!
With web publishing, users can edit data as well as view it--if you as the developer choose to allow them that option.
I'll try.. just seen it in the help file.
