FM8: Group identical records, show totals

      Post

           Hello everyone,

I'm new to FileMaker, and I'm trying to use FileMaker Pro 8 (old, I know) to create an inventory report. I want to have separate records for each individual item in our inventory, but when I generate a report in List View, I want it to group identical records together and display their total. Here's an example.

The way my List View looks now:

           ItemA
           ItemA
           ItemA
           ItemB
           ItemC
           ItemC

The way I want my List View to look:

           ItemA 3
           ItemB 1
           ItemC 2

Essentially I want a GROUP BY with a COUNT, just showing the distinct item names with their totals. You'd think there'd be a simple way to do this, but I'm stumped. I've tried adding a subsummary part to the layout, but then it looks like this:

           ItemA 3

           ItemA
           ItemA
           ItemA

           ItemB 1

           ItemB

           ItemC 2

           ItemC
           ItemC

When I remove the body from the layout, instead of just showing the subsummary part, it shows a blank page. What am I missing? I'm considering upgrading to FM12 just for the ExecuteSQL function if I can't figure this out. I appreciate any help with this.
