When working with blocks of text you can right click it and get the options for Text Format, Number Format, Date Format, and Time Format. The cool thing is that you can choose number and format it the way you want and you can choose date and format it the way you want and FileMaker will be smart enough to know the difference. The bad part is that you can only set one type of format per block of text per type. For example if you have Money AND some other number (Quantity) in your block of text as merge fields then both of those numbers will receive the same formatting.
Hi Fellow FMP'ers!
Like Dave, I have a form letter contained by a layout, in my case using FMPro 11 Advanced, and the letter includes a "date" merge field within a block of text.
The default date format when viewed in Preview mode is not to my satisfaction so I'd like to change it---but when I click on this merge field in Layout mode and then view the formatting options they are greyed out-at the bottom it says "not avaialble".
The block of text containing my date merge field does not include any other number fields with potentially conflicting formatting attributes, a problem which was mentioned by Chad in his reply above on this topic.
What am I doing wrong here? Is there something else in the attributes of the field that could be disabling the formatting options?
Many thanks for anyone who might have some advice on this problem!

You need to select all the text block, using the "arrow" tool, NOT the "text" tool ( so to see the four black squares )
Thanks, Raybaudi!! I followed your instruction and that did the trick! I didn't realize you had to select the entire text block.
