Getting Started on "if" statements

I'm building a database with four levels: Branch of Math, Topic, Sub-Topic, and Learning Objective. I'd like to create a series of pre-populated dropdown menus at each level to facilitate creating new records. An example would be, if "Algebra" (rather than Geometry, Trig, or Calculus) is chosen from the "Branch of Math" field, then only the algebra topics will appear in the "Topic" dropdown menu. Similarly, when the algebra topic is chosen, only the related sub-topics will appear, and so on with the Learning Objective.

My problem is that I'm very new to Filemaker and honestly don't know where or how to begin creating this logic. Can anyone help point me in the right direction for instructions on how to program this into my database? I'm really a novice here.
