Has anyone notice Get(Device) FMP14 returns 5 for Android
FM help for Get(Device) states will return 5 for Android
So is there going to be an Android version soon ?
Was this accessing a web direct published DB via a browser?
It is in the help file of FM14, not any detail information.
I was looking to see if FM had added a value for webdirect in 14 and noticed they had added one for Android.
Get(SystemPlatform) returns 4 for webdirect
Good catch, I am curious now also. Thanks
Thank you for your posts.
WebDirect will now work on an Android device. This will now allow you to design layouts for Android users, much like you would do for iPhone and iPad clients.
I thought WebDirect in FMS13 worked with Android. I don't see the benefit of the new command just for WebDirect. It would be almost impossible to design a specialized layout just for Android devices, because there are so many different device that runs Android. You can design a layout to resize, but it would not matter if it was Android or not.
WebDirect may have worked with an Android under FileMaker Server 13, but Get (Device) will now let you know the device is an Android so you can plan your layouts accordingly.
I wouldn't say this is evidence that an Android version is coming out.
There are several reasons why FMI may have added this. The main one being for completeness. In 13, Get ( Device ) returned numbers for PC, Mac, and iOS. What did it return for Android then? Probably "?".
Also, without it, there'd be no way of collecting data on Android use (to support an Android version).
TSGal said that it didn't mean they were coming out with a new version, it was added for webdirect.
I guess you could use it to track if someone tried to use your databases using an Android, but I don't know what good that is.
I don't know how you can plan your layout accordingly with that command. There are several different devices running Android with different size screen, so that command would be useless for that purpose. Sony, Samsung, Toshiba are just three companies that make Android devices, and there are several more, so just knowing it is Android would not help.
I guess it is a move in right direction. I was hoping for more when I first see that added to the command.
