Not really something that you can do simply. When FileMaker exports records, it creates a completely new file.
Thus, you can use Export Records to generate a brand new excel file with just the columns of data you want, but it won't open an existing file and insert data into it.
What you might do is export the data to an excel or csv file, then use Send Event to open an existing Excel File. I've read that you can set up a Macro in excel that can import data when the file is opened so the last step would be to create such a macro and then FileMaker can export the data and open the existing file--the macro in it would then import the newly exported data into excel.
Thank you PhilModJunk!
I guess this really is too complicated when the goal is to fill in 4 fields in an Excel file.
Will continue to do this manually.
Any chance that future versions of FM will be more flexibel with regards to link-out?
All the best, Chris
I am a fellow user and have no more idea than others as to what might happen in future versions.
You might also search for a FileMaker Plug in that might do this for you. I know that some have been created that append data to the end of a text file. Don't know if one has been created for doing the same with Excel.
So this makes it even more admirable, that you help out people like myself in such a nice and effective way!
I'll look for plug-ins, that's a valuable hint.
Have a good day!
