You have three tabs in Database Manage - Tables, Fields, Relationships
You create a relationship by select and drag the student number to the stu no to link the two tables.
A student can have many classes, classes will have many students. A join table is almost always needed.
These links to Google "student join table site:forums.filemaker.com" should help
The links in my list may be useful, especially the first five.
Okay – that’s the way I linked them, many to many. I guess I’m not getting the reporting right. I’m trying to set it up so I selecting the class from a drop down and have all the students listed the are in that class. I have more learning to do.
Thanks for the links.
If you select a "Unique Values" validation field option for your student number field in the students table, your relationship will display as the typical one to many relationship.
There are multiple ways to set that drop down up. A Portal to students placed on the Courses layout will list all students linked to that course and you would simply need to find the correct course to see the list of students. This does not require a drop down, you can use find mode and perform a find.
You can also perform a find on the Student layout by specifying a course number in the field from the related courses table.
You can get your drop down if you add a global field for the course to use for you drop down and then perform a script that uses the value in the global field to find your students. Scripted Find Examples
That put me a whole lot closer to what I’m trying to accomplish.
