To start, do you have a "child" table? Are the two tables related by a unique ID? As well, giving us a real world explanation of what you're doing would help.
Rick Whitelaw: My project is quite complicated and would take
a while to explain. But basicly I would like to have 3 records and each record
fits inside another record. So Record 3 is the child of Record 2 and Record 2
is the child of Record 1.
And I have no idea what you mean by "related by a unique ID" and certainly haven't
thank you DaSaint! I will certainly look at these. And once
I know about realtionships, how can I create a child
Record? And can you have a Child of a Child?
(or you could call it a grand child!)
That second link shows an exercise where you have a record, a child record and a child of that child.
All on one layout with two portals.
If you look at that video you might get the idea.
DaSaint: I have watched the videos, but I have one more question.
I use the table view for my project, so what will happen to the portal
when I click into table view?
Okay, I have solved my previous question myself.
But I have one more!
When I use the find tool,
will I be able to find the
data entered into the child record?
So, if I had a Parent Reord called Telephones, and there was a
child record with all of the Brands of telephones (say, Philips)
would I be able to search Philips and find all the information about that
Note: This is an example, I'm not really doing a Telephone database! :)
Well, you watch video's quick.
It depends on how you have solved your problem.
If you create a layout with a portal you can perform a find in the portal.
But I don't know if a layout (in form view) with a portal is what you are using?
If you create a record telephones and you perform the find for "Philips" in your portal you will get all records that have "Philips" in their related table (in the portal)
Thank you so much DaSaint! You have solved my problem utterly and completely!
In fact, the layout in the second video is exactly the layout I want!
And now I'm sure I will be able to search things, my problem is solved!
So thank you again DaSaint!
You are welcome, I hope you learned something in the process.
I think this is the example file I made:
