By 'taken care of' do you mean auto entered? Without having any idea of your DB, cant you just enter find mode and search by last name? You should have a field on there for last name, or better yet a calculation field that has LastName, FirstName. You could set these to only be entered in find mode.
But the next question would be, what if 2 people have the same first and last name? Are there other fields on the layout (i.e full address) that will indicate you have the right person?
Like if i enter the student id the rest of the field is auto filled. We could do a search but it takes a few more clicks. What i wanted was an alternative to a student id like first or last name. It's a student database that i am currently working on. A calculation field can probably work but i don't know exactly how to make one. I am attaching a screenshot of what my billing layout looks like.
Assuming your Find button searches Student ID, a simple way might just be to tap into the Find at the top of your layout. Use a Show Custom Dialog Script Step. When you click it, it asks, "Would you like to search by Student Name or Student ID? Set the 3 buttons for Student Name, Student ID, and Cancel. Then you could go into find mode, search. The find button could be laid over a name field. The name field only enabled to be entered on find mode.
What script is attached to the find button?
You could set up an additional relationship based on first and last name. Use a new table occurrence of the Student Table for this. A portal based on this relationship could then list all students of the specified first and last name and clicking a button in the portal row could enter the clicked record's student ID into your ID field and thus trigger your look up of information.
You could also use the method shown in this demo file:

Phil this is amazing! Thank you so much! Took me some time though to figure it out. It works perfect!
