      Title

how to do find replace a blank field

      Post

"Find/Replace"  Find = should return blank fields but does not work

      example:

      Find What: =

      Replace With: USA

      Direction: All

      Search across: all records

      Search within: Current field

      Replace All

      DOES NOT WORK

      What im doing wrong here?

          I'd do it this way:

Enter find mode (click the find button)

          Enter = in the field

          Perform the find

Enter USA in the field and leave the cursor in it.

Select Replace Field Contents from the Records menu

Use the current contents option to update all the records with this field empty to have USA in them.

Note that this does not use Find/replace at all.

And note that the 'Replace' function (and I'll bet the 'Find/Replace' function) CANNOT be undone, so before playing with it, I'd do a backup.

Yep. During development, Always make backups. Always make and KEEP LOTS of backups...

I had the same question, and have used Replace Contents, but the question still remains. Why doesn't the find request "=" work here? It should find all blanks in the selected field in the found set and replace the contents with the desired text. I have the need for it, too -- the same as "Empty Fill" command in Panorama. The error message one gets is not helpful:

No amount of clicking or selecting or tabbing will satisfy the Find/Replace demand for a selected field, even though one starts in a field, invokes Find/Replace, types "=" into the Find box and tries to replace content.

It should either work to find records in the found set with the designated empty field, or it should fail completely. As it is, one is left in a limbo, trying to select a field, when apparently the problem is that the usual find operators don't all work in the Find/Replace window.
