Set up a number field with your primary ID, such as CustomerID and set it to auto-enter serial starting with 1. If you have existing records already, Show All Records and then run Replace Contents replacing the value in that field with 'serial and increment by 1.' Also check the box 'update auto-enter serial' which will set your auto-enter serial number to the last number it used plus 1, prepared for new incoming (or created) records.
Now when you import, after you specify the map, it will display a dialog. Check the box which says 'perform auto enter' and the newly imported records will be assigned the unique ID. :smileyhappy:
thanks for the help!
i do not see this step available in filemaker pro 9.03 advanced. perhaps i need to install 10 first?
You do not see 'what step', Josh?
Auto-Enter is set up in Manage Databases where your fields are defined. YOu select Options on your ID field and first tab is Auto-Enter. During Import, the auto-enter checkbox won't appear until after you've mapped and it is ready to perform the import. Just keep stepping through it until you see the checkbox 'Peform Auto Enter.' :smileyhappy:
Thanks alot! While in specify fields i hit "OK" and then was presented with the Import Options window where i checked the box for "Perform auto-enter options while importing (mod date, serial number, lookups, etc.)."
Appreciate the help!
That is great explanation of how to reset the PK of a parent table. (I tried it and it works great).
However, my 'child' tables do not update their FK to match the parent's new PK. What is the best way to do that?
