In portal set up, specify that the portal records be sorted by the MonthYear field. (You can probably sort the relationship instead, but I haven't tested that).
Define a summary field that computes a running total of Field 1. Specify that the totals restart for each sorted group and specify MonthYear as the "grouped by" field.
This will restart the running totals for each month in your portal.
Thank you for responding to my query. I do have the summary field setup already that has the running total in the portal. I would like to get the running total result in each row, in a separate field, back to the MainTable corresponding to the record based on MonthYear.
I was thinking of maybe needing to create a GetSummary(runningtotal, ????)...not sure what is the break within the portal or if this is possible. Initailly thought of GetNNumber but that was not a suitable option.
Thanks in advance!
You cannot use getsummary in a portal and get the results that you want. What I described works and fits the definition of a "running total". If this is not what you had in mind, please describe what you do have in mind in more detail.
Sorry for the confusion. Please see attached jpg to assist in what I am seeking PhilModJunk.
OK. I think I have it after fiddling around more this am / early pm..
Did a new reporting layout. Got the fields that I wanted. Had a sub summary for FY and MonthYear.
Sorted by FY and MonthYear. Then used the GetSummary of the RunningTotal. Was able to get the separate field that I needed.
Thanks PhilModJunk for making me think more!!
With a running total summary field, I don't think you need getsummary. You might try directly referencing the summary field and see if you get the correct value.
Since I went ahead and got my reults that I needed, can you explain to the rest of the forum how to reference the running total summary field in the portal for future reference as it may be a quicker method than teh GetSumarry via a report. TIA
Field x + Relatedtable::Summary Field y
will evaluate summary field Y in a grand total context (total is based on all related records).
But only if it is NOT a running total summary field.
Field x + RelatedTable::running total Summary Field y
will not return a total from a Grand Total context
However, now that I think this through, you still need to access the specific record. This may require using GetNthRecord to access the value from the Nth related record in order to access the correct record.
