Gosh! I hope that isn't the only way. Seems like a step backwards to have to write code for something that was automatic two versions ago.
But if that's the only way, thanks for the brutal truth.
I don't know that it is the only way. I just know that one of the improvments in 12 is that you can better control what options are available to the user when you use a script than are available in FileMaker 11.
Is your database hosted over a network? Some such settings aren't retained when you specify them from the client, but are retained when you specify them from the host. This can mean taking the file down off the server, opening it in FileMaker, making the needed selections and then putting it back up on the server when the file is hosted with Filemaker Server. Please note that I haven't tried this with settings for FileMaker 12, I am extrapolating from other experiences with versions 10 or 11 so feel free to try this and then report back.
My database is just running with one user on a single Mac. So no network or client issues.
Hopefully the change in behavior from FMPro10 to 12 isn't just an artifact of my using the trial version of FMPro 12.
I notice that if I don't quit the Filemaker program, that it does remember that I want to use file references, even if I quit my database and then open it again. But once I quit the Filemaker 12 program, it forgets my preference. I suppose it could be related to it being a trial version. Can anyone check this for me??
bounce ... short of writing scripts, is there a simple setting that will change this default? I have no idea how to write this script and apply it. I bone up on filemaker to get a project done and then I forget most of what I've learned by the time a year has passed.
This should be a "no-brainer" since it was the default in previous versions - namely that FM remembered the setting you customarily used.
Could some FM support staff chime in here: FM is a spendy product, seems like getting the correct answer should not take so long.

In a script should do what you want - Reference is a checkbox in the script definition window
