Try building the list on the concatonation of FirstName & " " & LastName. You will see them both listed then. However I would suggest you may get two Mary Smiths at some stage, so I would actually build it on that and their unique ID. Unless you only want the names Mary and Smith to be populated into the field, and there isn't a 'right' and 'wrong' Mary Smith.
Thanks Sorbs, I decided to use one field for both names together.
Simple is beautiful.
It's better to have two fields, FirstName and LastName, and a calculation field cFullName for the concatenation.
Having one field for the full name will eventually give you headaches if ever you would have to separate it. Concatenation is easy, splitting is hard.
Better, imho, than using a value list is to use a report list and select from that (if you have a business with lots of customers). If it is just a family file, not so important but more interesting.
The report list can be sorted by first letter (cField) and you could even created a popup on the header to select the letter.
Now you have a report list with LOTS of info to see and help make a selection. You can use a three or four line body and create a <<fields>> that looks like a mailing label, for instance and add whatever other fields you want.
An invisible button covering the area of the body will be used to take you to the form for that line or perform whatever script you want after putting various fields into variables.
I've found that data entry folks like to see much more information when choosing an account, especially when they have thousands of accounts and some names are quite similar.
A portal could also be used.
"A portal could also be used." - rapidly becoming my Picker Of Choice, for all the reasons outlined.
Thanks for your comments. I wonder if I'd ever run into problems having both names in the same field. It's a small company, 15-20 employees, payroll every 2 weeks, shouldn't be complicated.
I tried to play with a value list of ID-numbers, but the result was the same; you can't see both names, or if you can, lookup in other fields doesn't work properly.
Use the portal idea. Go on.
