Can you show a screen shot. When you tick 'Specify..' a sort records dialog should pop up where you select the details of how you want to sort with OK and Cancel buttons. Are you saying it's this window that wont let you continue? I don't quite understand where you "..input the 'Last Name' field..", unless you meant select the last name field. There's not one button or action in that window that prevents me from closing that window
Thank you, Steve. I attach a screen shot of the simple script; which reads:
Sort records [Restore; no dialog] followed by a Circle with a dot in the middle. When I press this circle, I'm asked to choose the same options repeatedly (Perform without dialog; and 'Specify sort order),without any indication of how the script with close so the action is performed.
I climbed out of the muddle by using the 'Exit Script' command, which allowed me to run the script, and to use it in another script
Exit script should not be needed. The sort has to complete before the exit script command can execute anyway and a script executes without any such step anyway once the last step is reached.
Did you by any chance try using a script trigger to perform this script?
Using the wrong trigger or implementing that trigger in the wrong way can result in a script tripping its own trigger and trapping you in an infinite loop.
Thank you for the constructive observation.
The answer to your question is No didn't use a script trigger.
I should perhaps explain that I'm learning FMPro 14 by working through FMPro 14 The Missing Manual and follow the instructions verbatim. Following the authors' instruction, I simply get 'stuck' when I complete the options of 'Perform without dialog' and 'Specify sort order'. Contrary to the authors' assertion, there is no Sort Window with an OK button to press.....
I don't understand either how to resolve this or what the symbol of the two concentric circles is and how it arrives; can you perhaps explain?
The interface for setting up scripts is quite different in Filemaker 14 than in older versions. I would guess that what you are reading is more specific to the older "manage | Scripts" System that was replaced by the scripts works space.
When you click the "Specify sort order" button, this opens the "sort window" where you select fields for your sort order and there is indeed an Ok button to click to close this window.
Thank you, PhilModJunk
Actually, you're using the Advanced FMPro 14 by contrast with the plain vanilla version. When I press 'Specifiy', I simply get an infinite series of the options to 'Perform without dialog' and 'Specify sort order'.
Yet revisiting the instructions in The Missing Manual, in the light of your comments, I think the source of my problem is that this manual omits the instruction to press the triangular symbol to run the script.
These options and dialogs should be exactly the same in FileMaker Pro 14 and FileMaker Advanced 14.
And you are correct, the script will not run automatically. You have to either:
a) click a button set up to run this script
b) trip a script trigger set to run this script
c) select this script from the Scripts menu if you have set it up to be visible in this menu
d) click that triangle button in scripts workspace.
Many thanks: I look forward to reviewing this carefully early tomorrow
