I "thought" I knew how to do a Boolean checkbox, but why is THIS happening?

Hi all. I thought I knew the drill. Number field, display as checkbox, link to value list with the single value of "1". Hide the "1" on the layout. Easy, peasy.

But when I drag a text field next to my checkbox, pointed at the same field, and create a new record, the checkbox is unchecked, but...

      The textbox says "No"!

Yep, the word "No", capitalized and everything. What the...?

I had a calculation that depended on this field either containing "1", or being empty, or containing "0". I've got things working despite this odd behaviour, but what exactly is going on here? Why would a field auto-fill with "No"? I'd sure like to... "know".
