IF you are documenting the musical styles and instruments for a specific person, then you need to link them to People. Linking them to People styles will document the instruments and styles for a type of person and that means that all people of type "musician" would link to the sam elist of instruments and styles.
What is going into the tables called 'Join Table' ? Describe a little more about what you want this database to do & how you plan on using it.
Depending on how you need to use this information (reports, billing, ordering, etc.), it would seem to me you could put all of this on fewer tables. People types are attributes of People, and may not need a separate table and join table. Do staff, vendor, customers all have instruments & styles? Or are Styles and Instruments only associated with certain types of people? This info would help you decide on your relationships.
Thanks, Phil. That makes sense. Sometimes it's easy to get turned around in Filemaker…
And, thanks, Steve. So first, I put the people type in their own table because I'm not sure what reports we'll end up needing in the future. I thought it might make things easier to separate them out now. Also makes renaming and similar modifications quicker. And, only people of type "musician" are associated with Instruments. People of type "musician" or of type "composer" are associated with Styles. People of type "customer", "vendor", and "staff" are not associated with either.
