I want to bring data into a layout using a join table.
I want the fields "Common Name" and "Location" to fill in for each record.
Does this make sense and is it possible.
I was referring to the two layouts that you showed. But It would work as described on any layout based on one of the Tutorial: What are Table Occurrences? as I specified in my previous post. To "base a layout on a table occurrence" you select that table occurrence from "show records from" when creating the new layout or from Layout Setup... after you have created it.
A more detailed description of your layout would help. You don't need two fields for location and common name. You can keep that data in just the one table and still show that data on your layout. But the details will depend on which of the three table occurrences shown is selected in Layout Setup...|Show Records From for your layout.

I am not sure how to make the layout that I want from the join table.
I want one record for each bed that displays the location, the bed code, and a list of plants in the bed sorted by type of plant with scientific and common names.
I want to create these records on this layout.
As best I can tell from your post, you are linking a record for a specific type of plant to a specific planting bed record. There can be many different planting beds that have the same plant and a bed can have many different types of plants--thus your many to many relationship.
If that is correct, Common Name would be a field that should only be defined in the DAK Sample Plant List table. The Location field on the other hand, should be defined in the Plant Bed By Location table.
To show a list of planting beds and locations on your first layout, you'd add a portal to the join table and include the location field from the Planing Beds by Location table inside the portal row. To show a list of the plants in a plating bed, you'd put a portal to the join table on your planting bed layout and include the common name field from the DAK.... table inside the portal row in that portal.
Would this be on the first layout, or a new layout? I was thinking this would be a new layout based on the join table, but it seems you are saying it would be a new layout based on the Plant Inventory table.
