How will filemaker know to change the view of the data while you are browsing?
Do you want additional data to appear for the item currently selcted (mouse clicked) in the portal? When a tab is clicked? or ?
I was thinking to use a field trigger "OnObjectEnter" to change the field outside the portal, but I haven't been able to figure out how to change a field elsewhere (below the portal).
I set the elsewhere field name "e.g. description" but it stayed on the value of the first record (row) when I move up and down it never changed.
It is possible yes.
Theres a few ways to do this.. Depending on the layout's table occurence you are using.
Lets say your layout is based on main table
Your portal is from items table
What you could do is add a secondary relationship to the table your portal uses
Add a global field : g_sel_item_id
Add a relationship :
maintable -> ItemsTableAddInfo
g_sel_item_id = item_id
When clicking on a portal row, make it set the g_sel_item_id to YOUR item_id and refresh
You can then add your additional fields based on the ItemsTableAddInfo occurence since the global field will contain the item id in focus, the relationship will show the relevant record.
The other way is to base the layout your using of an occurence of the Items Table, then use goto related record, using current layout.
There are of course a few other ways to do this, but I will leave it as that for now.
Hope this makes sense....
If you want additional data to appear when you click a portal row, that as SW suggests, can be done fairly easily. Let us know if that's what you have in mind. This is one of those situations where how you design your tables, layouts and what you want will greatly affect the exact details of how you set this up.
