Is this folder located on a different computer? If so, is this a shared directory and is this drive mapped/mounted so that the user could use the same exact path to open the file directly instead of viewing it in FileMaker?
Are you using IWP, Filemaker Go or FileMaker Pro to access the database?
The folder is on the desktop of the same computer and if i paste the image path into a browser it finds the image. I am using FMP.
Then this should work.
Let's do a small test to check for problems:
Put the focus on the container field by clicking/tabbing.
Select Insert Picture
Find the file in this folder. Select "store by reference" and insert the picture.
The inserted picture should now be visible in the container field.
Now add this calculation field next to the container field. We'll call it cContainerText:
Define cContainerText as a calculation, select text as its return type and put the name of your container field in the calculation box as it's sole term. Resize this field to be several lines of text tall so that you can see the entire contents.
Compare the file path in this field for the image you just imported to that found in this same field for one of your records where the image was imported. They won't have the same number of lines of text, but the file path should be identical.
I tried your calc as suggested.
My field shows as the path as - file://C:/Users/Server/Desktop/Images/2010022413899_01.jpg
The cContainerText field shows the path as - size:642,390
image:../Images/1 Lombard Street.jpg
imagewin:/C:/Users/Gary/Desktop/Images/1 Lombard Street.jpg
I am guessing I need to replace the "file://c:/" in my field with "imagewin:/C:/"?
I would think this is indeed the case. Which import option did you use? I would think that the import folder option would have imported the image files with the Imagewin or imagemac designation.
Apologies I am being a bit dense here - it's been a long week. My file path is the result of a GetAsText calc in an independent field so is not linked to the image direct.
When I import an image into the container field, with the store only a reference to the file option checked, it imports an image.
I am confused as how I see the actual link that is stored by the container filed and which I can then edit to ensure the correct image is linked to.
Sorry if I'm butting in (and maybe you purposely picked up an image for the test that is not a relipcation of the problematic stored images), but are those images not in different locations?
C:/Users/Gary/Desktop/Images/1 Lombard Street.jpg
Create another calculation with the name of the container field as the calculation. Before you close the window, select the results to be text. That will show you the path being used.
