      Importing Phone Numbers

      Post

I'm testing out FileMaker to possibly replace an older database program. I've imported a data file ot use to test it but there is one problem. The old program is set up to handle phone numbers so if I enter ten digits it will display them as (xxx) xxx-xxxx. When imported into FileMaker the phone number is displayed as ten numbers in a row, making in harder to read. Is there any way to either make it impor the phone numbers so they will appear as phone numbers rather than just ten numbers, or is there any way to edit the data once it is in FileMaker to change how it appears?

Make your telephone field a text field. Add an auto enter Calculated Value (from the Field Options) and un-tick "Do not replace existing value of field if any" and create a calculation to look as follows:

          "("  &  Left ( Self ; 3 ) & ") " & Middle ( Self ; 4 ; 3 )  & "-"  & Right ( Self ; 4 )

          Hope this helps.

Actually this one is better. Remember it will only work for the first 10 digits

            Let ( phone = Filter ( Self ; "0123456789") ; "("  &  Left ( phone; 3 ) & ") " & Middle ( phone ; 4 ; 3 )  & "-"  & Middle ( phone ; 7 ; 4 ) )
