It depends on whether this is going to be an ongoing thing or a one-off import.
If it is ongoing and the fp5 database is going to remain in use, I would advise exporting from the fp5 to perhaps Excel and then importing that into fp7.
If it is a once-off import, by all means open the fp5 file in FileMaker Pro 7 or later, convert it and then import into the other file you have. Be sure to keep the original fp5 file.
ASSUMING the target database exists in FMP9 and it is only the data is to be used.
IF the target DB has the same field names and it is a one database to one database import, without repeating fields (or matching repeating fields) the conversion and import would be simpler.
Thanks for the response. I tried exporting from the fp5 into a .csv and then opened it in excel but none of the field names transferred over.
Since this is going to be an ongoing thing, I like the idea of exporting to excel rather than converting. However, the number of fields we have to manually input because they don't export over as the first record may keep us from exporting. Any ideas?
When exporting, choose the Merge format, or preferably (if you have version 6) the XML format (using FMPXMLRESULT grammar, without a stylesheet). You can import the resulting file directly - no need to go through Excel.
I have FileMaker 5 but not 6. I'll try your suggestion and post my results.
Thanks for the advice!
