Importing Text Records Increases Size of Database by 14MB

      Post

I'm importing a set of 20,000 records in to a clone of a file. The clone is 6MB but when the records are imported the file increases to 20MB. The records are only text, the text file containing the records is 1.6MB, is it something to do with the indexing?

           Thanks

That is a very likely to be the case. If there is one or more text fields in your file that are fully indexed, FileMaker will maintain two indexes: One that indexes the first x Characters (I forget the exact number) and one that indexes every individual word in that field. For large numbers of records and with fields that store a lot of text (you can put gigabytes of data into a single text field), these indexes can have a very significant effect on your file size, but keep in mind that these indexes have a very important purpose, you can turn off indexing to reduce your file size, but then searches and sorts that reference the field that is no longer indexd will perform much, much slower.
