Indexing and matching speed: Can it be done in less than 13 hours

Post

We have a large database that we are using for a market research project.

This database is a reference file out of which we select addresses foru our research

The file is about 3 gb is size, contains 8 million records  of which one is an email address

We now need to combine data in this file with an external file (about 5 million addresses ) using the email address as a match key

We are copying data from one field in the match file to the new file using a relace all.

We are using filemaker 7. So far the matching has taken 13 hours ... and it is still not done

(note we also tried using a matched import, this ran for a full day and was than 1/3 done)

This is being done on an acer 6593 computer with 4 GB ram a 320 gb disk and fairly high processor speed

Questions:
Would this work be quicker using filemaker 10... if yes by small or large amount ?

Are there things that could be done to speed up the data transfer and matching

Any help/ suggestions are welcome...
