Title

inside a child table layout: choosing a field from the parent table

Post

We have two tables, 'person' and 'repair', with fields similar to:

  •           person_id (primary key, auto increment)
  •
  •           person_name

  •           repair_id (primary key, auto increment)
  •
  •           repair_date
  •
  •           repair_person_id (foreign key)

person_id and repair_person_id have been linked as a one-to-many relationship in the relationships graph.

When filling out a new repair, we'd like to be able to choose a person to relate the repair to, but choose by name, rather than enter their person_id. For the moment we'd like to do this by a drop down list. In the future, when the person table gets very large, we'd like to do this via autocomplete and/or search.

We're having trouble getting this to work in the layout. If we insert a new field/control to the repair layout, selecting the person_name field from the person table, we get a dropdown list, but it won't drop down.

What might we be doing wrong?
