trying to change the list names under "related customers".
Exactly how are you changing the names? On a layout, in a value list definition, in Manage | Database | Fields or... ?
in value list definition.
Which value list?
When I open Manage | Value Lists..., the ones that seem likely to be the one your are trying to change specify that their values are drawn from a field in another table. How did you change this list?
Which buttons, on which layout no longer work?
Answering those two questions will tell me where to look and how to explain what's happened.
hello again....well, I added a screen shot on my original post to illustrate where I am making the change (under the similarity criteria value list). BTW, this is all from the Invoices Starter Solution.
Within this screen, I select edit. And then change company to unit and city to destination to suit my needs.
Once I do that, the buttons corresponding to "Show customers with the same: O Name O Company O City"
change to "O Name O Unit O Destination" as requested, but they no longer work.
does that help you help me :) ? v/r
Which version of FileMaker are you using? I've just flipped through every layout in Invoices using the template that came with Filemaker 11 and can't find any field formatted as radio buttons that uses that value list.
Perhaps I can't see the obvious, perhaps you are using an older version of the starter solution that came with an older version of FileMaker or perhaps this radio button format is something that you've added to the original starter solution.
hang on, i will put up a screenshot on the original post (seems i can only post one) v/r
You can also upload screenshots to a file sharing site and then put the link to it in your posts. That allows you to keep your original image in the first post.
done, should see it now...(look lower right of screenshot) v/r
anyways, i am using filemaker pro 11 (just bought it)
ah, i will google a filesharing site now. thanks, v/r
The value you select in Similar By is used in a calculation field called Similars_Key that is defined as:
Similar By = "Name";
Similar Name Key;
Similar By = "Company";
Similar Company Key;
Similar By = "City";
Ship To City;
The value of this field is used in a relationship to match to a calculation field called Similars_MultiKey that's defined as:
Similar Name Key & "¶" &
Company & "¶" &
Ship To City
With your changes, the Similars_By field now returns an empty string and this breaks the relationship to similar customer records. You will need to update the Similars_By calculation and possibly the Similars_MultiKey calculation before your value list change will work. (I can't tell from here as I don't know if you added a Name, Unit and Destination field or renamed existing fields by changing the names on the layout.)
ah, funky stuff...i will try it from that angle......I need to get smart on relationships etc anyways! thanks for your time and talent! dan
This is a special "multi-value" key technique that is fairly unique to FileMaker. Here's how it works:
If you have a text field with values separated by carriage returns, (that's what the "¶" represents here), a relationship linked to this field will match to any of the listed values. Thus, if you had return separated values of Apple, Orange and Strawberry, stored in such a text field, it would match to any record with Apple, Orange OR Strawberry stored in the corresponding key field.
If both fields are multi-value keys such as in this example, any single value in one key can match to any single value in the other in order to establish a match between the two records.
that is also helpful...i just got to digest it slowly, but i think i get it....time to tinker with it!
