the body part of the layout has to be rebuilt every time you want to run the report.
I am not sure what you mean by that. For a summary report, simply remove the body part from the layout. If you also need a detailed report, use another layout.
Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry, I must be misunderstanding something. The layout needs the data fields in the body to calculate the summary data. To me, "remove the Body part from the layout" means go into Layout mode, select Part Setup, and delete the Body from the layout. Am I missing something?

I feel like such a dope. This is the first time I designed a report not to show the Body, and I was thinking there had to be some esoteric function to collapse or hide the part. Meanwhile, finding records and performing calculations, then switching to another layout is something I do all the time in other circumstances. Duh.
