Hi Jack Key,
You can run DOS command line actions from FileMaker, but you will need to create the actual commands in a batch file [.bat] that file maker calls using the Send Event script step.
From teh Script Editor, choose Send Event and then from the Options dialogus choose "open documnet/application" for the 'Send the' options and then click on Specify next to "File:" and point to your Batch file
This will then trigger that batch file and FileMaker will pause until the process has completed.
I dont know of any way to get the result of the batch file apart from writing a result to another file and importing that result into FileMaker.
I hope this helps
"apart from writing a result to another file and importing that result into FileMaker." - that's how we do it.
You can even use FileMaker to dynamically create the Batch file in a text field using script and/or a calculation field that returns text. (This way you can feed the needed data, such as the path to the directory to the command line and be able to use the same set of DOS commands with more than one set of parameters.)
You can then use Export Field Contents to export the command lines to create the batch file. Since you can specify that Export Field Contents open the file automatically, I wouldn't be suprised to find that such an option would then execute the batch file for you, but I haven't tried it to be sure.
(You can also use a Get function to list the contents of all directories within your documents folder without needing a system script or plug in to do so. That might be an option for avoiding the need for this method in some situations.)
Thank You all for your comments and suggestions. I appreciate your willingness to help.
It sounds like a combination of Orlando and PhilModJunk's iformation may work. I will have to try it out.
I am trying not to use another program.
If you look at the FileList.exe program at: http://www.downloadatlas.com/freeware-db577bcf.html
That is basically what I want to do just in Filemaker.
You don't need to use another program - their ideas will work. We use it to find a list of downloaded files, move them to another folder, rename them, collect the folder content names into a file, import each file in the folder, then move the folder contents to another archive folder.
My computer is having technical difficulties.
I need to blow it away and start new.
When I have a fully functional computer again I will try the ideas provided above.
Thank You everyone... I will let you know how it fairs when I get back to that stage. :o)
Thanks Guys I am new to Filemaker as a developer (found a v6.0 on the bookcase and tried it out ...).
I worked this solution using your commands through the SEND Message menu and it works fine do remember this is v6.0
connecting to old Compsee Apex II PDT and it runs perfectly, I was delighted I thought I was going to need a plugin ... more money out etc...etc...,
Yep its good to be working back with FPro again although 12 years later !!
