For this type of question (and most others as well) it would hep to know your OS, Filemaker version, and in this case, the "other applications" involved. Someone here can likely help you.
Ok I didn't think to refer these things. We are using Mac OS X v 10.6.3, Filemaker Pro 11, and the other application is Serial Cloner.
Several tools you can investigate:
- Open URL can be used to open a file.
- Files can be inserted "by reference" into container fields in FileMaker and then used to open the originals on demand.
- A webviewer can be used to list and open the contents of a directory, though this encounters bugs in Windows XP.
- Plug Ins produced by third party developers are available that give you added abilities for listing and working with the contents of a folder. You can web search for these and find several.
If you are interested in the Web Viewer approach see this link (It includes syntax for configuring the web viewer to list folder contents): Limited Local File Access Through Web Viewer in Windows XP
This is one of many acknowledged bugs that can be found in the Known Bug List here in the Report an Issue section of the forum.
