It should not, I've used that method frequently with a script that loops through records for A Parent table and keeps switching to a layout for a related child table to process a change on those records and then switching back to move to the next record in the parent table. Describe your issue in more detail if You'd like and we can take a closer look at why this isn't working for you.
You can also open a new window and then close the window when you are done with the related records. It would look something like this:
Go To Record/Request/page [ Fist ]
Go To Related Record [ child table ; using NEW WINDOW ; match current record only ]
... do your work with these records
Go To Record/Request/Page [ Next ; exit after last ]
