Making a container field only save a reference of a file

      Post

I have recently seen my filemaker database grow quite large and I think it may be because I forgot to save only a reference when importing some image files.  Is there a way to fix that without re-importing everything?

      Thank you,

Without importing or inserting the file, there is no way for FileMaker to determine the file path to the "by reference" image file.

YOu can, however, write a script that uses export records to export an image file to it's specified storage directory and then to re-insert it from that folder, but with "store a reference" enabled.

If you put a calculation field next to your container field, you can tell by inspection whether or not a reference to the file was inserted in the container field:

Just put the name of the container field as you sole calcluation term for the calculation field and specify that "text" be the return type.
