After "Exiting the field"? Once you exit the field, the forground field should pop to the front and obscure the drop down.
Thanks for the prompt reply!
You're right. It does as you suggest, but, from a user's perspective, seeing that value at all seems counter-intuitive and out of context. I'd rather it stayed comlpletely concealed. I'm aware that the pop up menu accomplishes this but I prefer the drop down in this situation. It's not worth too much hassle though.
Surely the user has to see the value in order to make a selection? If not, then you can hide that column in your value list definition.
Well, I can see how busy you are, so I won't belabor this. To clarify, the value that I think should stay completely in the background is the serialized key vaue (the filst field of the value list that is only shown during selection). The only value a user ever needs is the value list's second field. Am I too anal about this?
At this point its layout manipulation you might try some script triggers on modify etc make it do as desired (ie leaving the field). I know getting this kind of thing exactly right is somewhat of a pain.
If the user doesn't need to see the serial number field when making a selection (and they shouldn't, the info in the second column should be designed to be unqiue and sufficiently detailed so that a User can make the necessary selection without knowing the serial ID), then you can hide this column using settings in the value list definition and then cover the drop down formatted field with the opaque field to hide it when you exit the field. When you are in the field, you don't see the number as it's hidden by the value list settings. When you exit the field, it is now hidden by the opaque field you placed on top of it.
I think the issue here is using a Drop Down List instead of a Pop-Up Menu. The issue comes up with the drop down list when an choice has already been made in the serial key field. Though it is masked after the choice, when the user then goes back to change that choice, when the user clicks into the field, the serial id shows in the field, no matter what you do to it in terms of blending the background color, or even using script triggers to delete it, it becomes a bit of a mess. So, try formatting the field using a pop-up menu instead.
