I’m making an invoice table layout that has a portal for the invoice line items. When the description of a line item is too long it just gets cut it off. How do I get a line item to take up enough rows for the description to be readable?

Well you could always make the portal rows larger. You should really try and print from a layout based off your child records ( portal records ) instead of the parent. You can put the parent info in the header and use a list view for the items.

Use sliding to get rid of the extra spacing.

I’m trying to transition into filemaker from quickbooks. Many of my invoice item descriptions are entire paragraphs. In quickbooks it just allows a line item to takeup additional rows so it can show the entire description and pushes the other items down. A portal view in filemaker seems to not be that flexable.

Im not sure what your saying I should do.

Here are pictures of what I’m talking about…

Above is QuickBooks and the long description expands to aditional lines so that you can read it.

This is FileMaker. The long description is cut off. I want to be able to have some items take up just one row but have others take up as many as they need.

Sliding fields is a technique for printing or previewing a report. The "slide" is not visible in browse mode.

What you want is not possible, as far as I know, in filemaker. You'll have to either make your field several text rows tall and put up with the wasted space or make do with the text being truncated unless you click in the field in browse, or use sliding fields to preview/print your layout.
