itemBarCode should just be a field in the Equipment table.
I imported 4,000 records into the Equipment table from an existing rental database.
I'm using their existing information for many of the fields in that table. The table is really just information about which items they own, nothing detailed about the items. So if I add itemBarCode to this table, wouldn't I have to create an additional record? And then, I would have multiple items in the value list?

I'm still very new with Filemaker, so if I'm wrong, please give me advice...

You can add a field and define it to auto-enter a serial number to use as the barcode.
For records that you have already imported, you can use Replace Field contents to update that field with a serial number.
