Why don't you want to use a portal? (Knowing why can help us make better suggestions on how to do what you want.)
To create a new related record via script:
assuming these tables, fields and relationships:
ParentTable::PrimaryKey = ChildTable::ForeignKey
Set Variable [$PrimaryKey ; ParentTable::PrimaryKey ]
Go to Layout ["ChildTable" (ChildTable) ]
Set Field [ChildTable::ForeignKey]
Just substitute your table and fields names for those used in this example
Warning, a number of different script triggers can be tripped by the go to layout script step.
Am I reading right? You have 40 container fields in one record?
Any way, one answer is this:
Create a layout for your new record containing the fields you want. Avoid putting any triggers, etc. in it other than to size the record in your window.
set var $link to the value in the field you use to create the link/TO between parent and child tables.
Go go layout (new record)
set field in that table that links to your parent record with $link
now you can edit the rest of the record.
You can drag fields from the parent record onto this layout for information purposes and even edit them.
